Transcription of the article from the Journal of Orthopedic Surgery published on April 21, 2019:

The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections on grade 2 intrasubstance meniscal degenerations (MID).

Methods

Fifteen patients who underwent PRP injections for symptomatic grade 2 meniscal lesions were included in the study.

All injections were performed using ultrasound guidance into the degenerated menisci. Patients were assessed with a Lysholm score and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before the injection and after an average follow-up of 32 months.

T2-weighted MRI images were evaluated on the sagittal plane by two authors in a double-blind manner.

Results

The observed result is that the Lysholm score was statistically increased, and in 67% of the patients, grade 2 degenerations improved to grade 1.

Conclusions

In conclusion, ultrasound-guided intra-meniscal PRP injection provides good functional scores and radiological improvement in patients with MID.
